    Ten Soul-Tending Principles for Women

    Friday, September 09, 2005

    By Cheryl Lynch Simpson

Feeling restless? Is part of you calling out for change, though you don't yet know what that looks like, or what you most need?

Well, maybe, just maybe, you need a little soul nurturing. Try one or more of these nurturing principles on for size:

1.) Change expands soul. When the winds of change blow storms into your life, welcome them as much as possible, for what comes will free you in some vital way and make room in your life for newness.

2.) Hope feeds soul. We can endure anything if we have hope. Without hope, we die, body first, then soul. Do not give up!

3.) Proaction moves soul. Reacting to situations and events binds you to someone else’s agenda. Choosing proactivity sets your own soul’s needs into motion.

4.) The unexpected (atemporality) enlivens soul. Unexpected events break time wide open and reveal to us the fragility of existence, yet they also refresh, revive and make more room in our lives for soul.

5.) Dreams and the unconscious (personal and collective) reveal soul. Night and day dreams reveal to you the conversation your soul whispers to you all the time. Your personal unconscious reveals to you what your soul needs but you have been denying yourself. The collective unconscious reveals to you what society needs but is afraid of acknowledging.

6.) “Wild grace” and atmosphere welcome soul. “Wild grace” is the playful part of soul that longs to be welcomed into day-to-day existence. If deliberately expressed in your surroundings, “wild grace” will create space in your outer world for the sacredness you carry within.

7.) Community connects soul. As we connect with each other on deep levels, we connect our souls - that is the kind of intimacy we are all most drawn to. The simple truth is that we need each other to survive and thrive.

8.) Balance honors soul. When we are out of balance our soul suffers; in balance our soul can feed us as our Maker intended.

9.) Boundaries protect soul. Soul can be damaged, scarred and poisoned by life if we live unconsciously. With awareness and firm boundaries, we can protect what is most precious within us and those we care about.

10.) Creativity expresses soul. Creativity is the essence of life, so if you are alive (and you appear to be!), then you are creative. There is no escaping this part of your heritage as a human being. You were created to create. Doing so sets your soul free.
